Schizophrenia is a very serious brain disorder, many people who have schizophrenia will tell you that the disorder disturbs the way they think, act, express emotions, and even how they perceive things in their personal lives.  These symptoms can cause a huge interruption to their daily lives.  Sometimes people who are schizophrenic can be leveled out with medication, others cannot.  In either case helping yourself with positive and active motivation can help.  Daily stress can be too much to manage and deal with for most people with schizophrenia.  I have a technique that helps me to relax, and be able to spend a little time with myself just to get through those tough days, and don’t worry about the voices, just concentrate on your breathing.    Wink

How to Meditate and Relax

Find yourself a relaxing environment …

When you are feeling stressed out and just need to unwind, I have found the best way for myself to relax is to create a peaceful environment and put myself right in the center of it.  To relax in definition you should be releasing tension in not only your body, but your mind too.  When you relax the mind you are releasing it from intense concentration, hard work, and worry of any sort.  I have found that the best way for myself to relax is to meditate.  To meditate in my definition is to enter into a different state of mind where things become clearer and easier to accept and understand, this giving you a chance to step out of your current reality for a moment and reflect on your life.      So, give yourself a break, pick your favorite place to be, may it be in your favorite room of the house, down by the lake or stream, or on a big raft in the middle of the ocean, (if you’re an extremist).  If you can’t make it to that place it’s okay, get a big fluffy pillow set it down on your living room or bedroom floor.  When you are where you want to be you should find a comfortable position to either sit or stand in, keeping your posture in mind.  Make sure your body is centered and close your eyes, bring your hands, palms facing inward, to the center of your chest.  Take a deep breath in through your nose, tilt your head back just slightly to open your breathing passage, you should be able to hear the air going down your windpipe.  Then exhale through your nose.  This deep breathing technique helps to circulate the blood flow in your body.  After about 20 deep breaths stretch your arms bring them at a 90 degree angle with your body, hold them there for 5 breaths and bring them back to the center of your chest.  Continue breathing and try to think about a peaceful scene, envision yourself in this scene, you can be free of all outside thought in this place, or be open to let your mind roam to it’s full extent.  When you are in this relaxed state you can stay as long as you would like.
When bringing yourself out of this state, push your hands away from your chest breathing out, and then inhaling as you pull them back in, repeat this 5 to 10 times.  Take a deep breath in and out through your mouth, slowly open your eyes and perceive the life you’re living through your now relaxed mind.  This process can be repeated several times a day if you need to calm yourself from your daily stress.
